Starving Palestinians and American dissonance

Hungry Gazans carry boxes of food aid that they were able to get at dangerous Gaza Humanitarian Foundation sites.

Every day for the past month, 40,50,60 Palestinians, desperate with hunger, have been killed by Israeli snipers in Gaza as they approach food distribution sites set up by theso-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. This group was setup with US support by Israeli spy agency Mossad. The foundation is based in Geneva,Switzerland, and its real ownership is hidden by a complex web of shell companies.

Nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed at these food sites since May 27, 2025, and 4,186 injured according to the Gaza Government Media Office. Little coverage is given to this in American media. The New York Times carries stories about it, and CBS and NBC will occasionally have a story about it. But none of the three major TV networks have invited Palestinian or American doctors, or relatives ofPalestinian victims, to speak on their morning shows. This is in sharp contrast to the many Israelis who were invited on these shows to speak of the horror of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. The networks have been given strict orders by their owners to avoid any story that casts Palestinians in a good light or as victims. Victimhood is solely reserved for the Jewish and Black.

Where there were previously 400 aid distribution sites in Gaza run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), there are now only four sites run by GHF.

“The Israeli-US food distribution scheme in Gaza that was set up one month ago is forcing Palestinians to choose between starvation or risking their lives for miniscule amounts of aid,” the relief group Doctors Without Borders said on June 27, 2025.

“If people arrive early and approach the checkpoints, they get shot. If they arrive on time, but there is an overflow and they jump over the mounds and the wires, they get shot. If they arrive late, they shouldn’t be there because it is an ‘evacuated zone,’ so they get shot,” said Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa, the Medicins Sans Frontieres emergency coordinator in Gaza.

The Israeli occupying forces in Gaza have displaced millions of Gazans and created a real-life version of the Korean Netflix series “Squid Game”, in which indebted Koreans must play deadly children’s games in an attempt to win a jackpot.

The GHF food distribution sites are very difficult for children, women and the elderly to enter. They are the size of a football field, completely surrounded by a fence and snipers in towers. There is only one way in and out, and when they open the entrance thousands of starving Palestinians have to fight their way through to get the last bit of food available.

Each box of GHF provided food contains around 1,750 calories worth of foodstuffs, including 8.8 lb. of flour, a couple of bags of pasta, two cans of fava beans, a pack of tea bags, two bottles of cooking oil and a few biscuits, according to Aljazeera. They contain no clean, bottled water, medicines or blankets.

How can a whole Gazan family subsist on such meager rations when the World Health Organization says that individuals should consume 2,000 calories a day to remain healthy?

Israel put Gaza under a total blockade from March until May, where nothing was allowed to enter the strip. No water, no food, no medicines, nothing at all was allowed in.

“They are going to kill us one by one. We are hungry, we are just trying to feed our children. What else can I do?” said Hani Abu Soud to MSF.

Now the Israelis have stopped travelers from bringing in baby formula into Gaza, which has put hundreds of Palestinian babies at the risk of dying after huge price hikes (due to the shortages) put most baby formula, if they can even find it, out of reach of most Gazans. Most nursing mothers in Gaza have found their breast milk drying up because they are not finding enough food to eat, and because of the daily stress of indiscriminate Israeli bombings.

Which brings me to the American dissonance. Some of my American friends and relatives have no pity whatsoever of the starving Palestinians. They think they deserve to be starved and killed because of what Hamas did to Israelis on Oct. 7.

When I bring it up to them, their eyes glaze over, and they turn away. In doing so they are dehumanizing Palestinians and othering them. Many Israelis have done the same thing, with one Israeli government official publicly stating that Palestinians were subhuman, on the same level as dogs.

“Those are animals, they have no right to exist. They need to be exterminated,” said Israeli minister of education Yoav Kisch, referring to the Palestinians in Gaza, on Oct. 9, 2023.

A case in point is the letter written by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, addressed to the Trump administration, calling for the end of Israel’s starving of Gaza and the killing of hungry Palestinians. Shamefully, only 18 other congressmen signed the letter out of 435 representatives. A crying shame.

Of course, there are many fair-minded Israelis and American Jews who hate what the Benjamin Netanyahu administration is doing in Gaza. Thousands of them regularly protest on the streets of Tel Aviv, but that seems to have no effect on the government and larger population. Israelis have retreated so far into their cocoons of hate and revenge, that they no longer see Palestinians as humans, and they cheer as the Israeli military kills more and more Palestinians.

It’s disgusting and heartbreaking.
